In a significant update for lawful permanent residents, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration
Services (USCIS) has announced an extension of the validity of Permanent Resident
Cards, commonly known as Green Cards, to 36 months for those renewing their cards.
This change is effective as of September 10, 2024, and applies to individuals who file
Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card.
What You Need to Know
Previously, lawful permanent residents who submitted Form I-90 received a 24-month
extension on their Green Card's validity. Now, with the updated receipt notices,
applicants can enjoy a full 36-month extension from the expiration date listed on their
current Green Card. This update aims to provide greater support during what can often
be a lengthy renewal process.
Starting on September 10, USCIS began issuing amended receipt notices for
individuals with a pending Form I-90. These updated notices serve as official
documentation, allowing Green Card holders to prove their lawful permanent resident
status and employment authorization while awaiting their new cards.
Why This Matters
This extension is particularly beneficial for those who face longer processing times for
their renewal applications. With proof of lawful status readily available through the
amended receipt notices, applicants can avoid potential complications that might arise
from holding an expired Green Card.
If you find yourself in a situation where your Green Card is lost or expired, and you're in
the process of awaiting a replacement, USCIS offers additional support. You can
schedule an appointment at a USCIS Field Office by contacting the USCIS Contact
Center. During your appointment, you may be issued an Alien Documentation,
Identification, and Telecommunications (ADIT) stamp as temporary proof of your status
while your Form I-90 is processed.
